How are your teas flavored?

Updated: Nov 30, 2021

All of the teas I carry are NATURALLY flavored in one way or another. The tea leaves, flowers, fruit, nuts all effect the flavor of the tea, but sometimes it needs a little extra help!

How the teas we carry are flavored:

The flavoring that is used is ethyl alcohol based. Ethyl alcohol is PLANT-BASED, water-soluble, and a known sanitizer.

Ethyl alcohol is a ‘carrier’ for essential oils.

The essential oils are blended into the ethyl alcohol.

The essential oils breakdown into molecules creating a flavoring solution. The fluid is then applied to the tea blends by atomizing the flavoring.

The molecules in the solution penetrate the tea leave and the ethyl alcohol evaporates instantly.

The essential oil molecules are now deep within the tea leaving you with a wonderful flavor profile.

I always use Earl Grey tea as an example of an essential oil flavored tea. Did you ever notice the beautiful rainbow on the top of your cup of tea? That’s the bergamot essential oil. However, not all teas are flavored with Ethyl atomizing.

Other ways tea is flavored, which my supplier does not use, is known as Propylene Glycol (PG). PG is a petroleum-based. PG based flavored teas have a slight ‘chemical’ or ‘fake’ taste to them. “FUN FACT” PG is used by airports around the world to de-ice the planes. So, now you know that. Always read your teas, and please feel free to ask me any questions you have!
